Day 20 - Fender panel bottoms

(Originally posted on August 12th, 2013)

Didn't get in much build time today; neighbor of mine stopped by and we chatted at length about just what the heck is going on in my garage!  Turns out he's a carpenter, and was giving me some tips on what materials to potentially use for various bits.  One interesting thing he talked about was flexible poplar plywood for the shoulder skin as an alternative to soaking my HDF board.  Not sure if I'll do that (since I already have a bunch of HDF still unused), but it was an interesting notion.

Earlier in the day, I went out to Lowe's and bought a bunch of things, including more clamps (and a couple of belt clamps for securing the shoulder skins when I get to it), some pine for the neck struts and blocks, art board for tracing the shoulder skins, and a 1" length of dowel for alignment/placement pegs for the fender, skirt, and shoulders.

But, the only progress I made was gluing and securing eight of the 11 bottom fender panels.  I had to recut a couple of them, as they were a few millimeters shy of touching their adjacent panels, and I didn't want to fill that with just Bondo.

I can already tell I'm going to need to do a lot of Bondo-ing, sanding, and some visual trickery to make the facets all line up when it comes time to prime it, but overall I'm really pleased with the progress.  I'm nearly done with two of the sections now!

I really want to get to the shoulders and neck; I'll probably work on the neck while I'm waiting for various bits of the shoulders to dry/cure/whatever.
